Realism vs Fantasy

 Tyler was walking to school and stopped suddenly when he heard, "Hey kid, watch where you're going?". He looked down and saw an angry ant shaking its fist at him.

   

This is how I introduce realism and fantasy. I tell this story about one of my children and then tell a realistic version of the same story. I list the elements of both genres on an anchor chart and we practice identifying each genre during whole group reading using Reading Street.

  After practice during guided reading, I will put out books in a bag for reading workshop.  I choose books of similar themes, one fantasy and one realistic fiction. Good Readers Ask Questions

  Yeah it's Friday! I'm celebrating with a freebie that goes along with the Good Reader strategy of asking and answering questions based on the text.

   My class read Penguin Chick from the Reading Street series today and practiced the strategy. I am sharing the page I created for this. I am in the process of creating a whole penguin unit based on the nonfiction common core standards that will be available on TPT soon. I hope you enjoy the first part of this unit that I'm sharing. Fabulous Fables

  I'm excited to begin my fable unit this week. I'll start it off with the story What About Me?  from our Reading Street Series. The children will explore fables from my theme box and share their favorite.
  We will of course read The Boy Who Cried Wolf. The story is also good timing for our Character Education week kick off to emphasis honesty.
  After my fable unit I transition into folktales in time for Johnny Appleseed's birthday. Keeping it all balanced!
  I have created a page to practice identifying the moral of a story using details in the text. CCore RL 3.3 This is the freebie I am sharing this week.
